I have a minor problem here :-\ Iv got a way to mount my detector on my bike so i can take it into trails that are only accessible by bikeing. But what happens when i want to detect a path? I cant just leave my bike on a trail, could get stolen or vandalized :-\ Its a great bike, a Schwinn Mesa GS w/aluminum frame. Costs around $450 so its not something i want to just leave sitting on a trail while i detect it :( Any ideas on how to combine two great hobbies?

Bury it. You can always find it with your detector. ;D

I don't know Jake.....that's gotta be a lot worse than my shovel I have dragged all over the woods! ?:D

Might be a lot easier to just do one hobby at a time! ?:D

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Nana ????

There is a simple solution. There are gun racks made for mountain bike handle bars, I have some on mine, and they work great. A metal detector should mount to them just the same as a gun. Carry a cable lock on the bike to lock it to a tree.

Yeah Jake.... Get it off the trail, preferably out of sight, and lock it to a good sized tree that can't be broken to free the bike.? Not many hikers carry bolt cutters with them into the woods.? ?;)

It's pretty bad...? >:(? I have to consider where to park my Jeep so that I can keep an eye on it most of the time that I am out hunting to keep the illegal aliens from messing with it.? That is a "Damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation out here.? Park it where it can't be seen from the road and the illegals might mess with it, or park it where everyone can see it and the local thugs might mess with it.? Also since it's a 4x4 and I live in close proximity to Mexico, I have to keep full coverage on it because the drug runners love to steal 4x4 SUV's to drive loads of dope through the fence into the U.S. Full coverage is not the law, but a wise idea!? ?;)

Here's something else to ponder. If I go to Mexico, I have to have insurance for Mexico in addition to my regular full coverage insurance. My regular full coverage from StateFarm isn't good enough for them! If they come here, they have to have.... a car. Don't need insurance, license, nothing. They can drive around with twelve people in the back of a truck and four kids standing in the front seat, and two infants teething on the dash and no body can say crap to them. The police write them tickets and send them on their way. They go back to Mexico..... sometimes.... and NEVER pay the fine. Heaven forbid they be in an accident. You get stuck with EVERYTHING. They get a couple of tickets and sent on their way. And forget trying to sue to get money for your totaled car. And we just have to SUCK IT UP! The Police in Mexico have a good system. It's not really bribes that you pay them. They simply know that the people from there can't ever seem to remember their real address or name, and they don't carry ID's. Just pay a fine/bribe and be done and on your way. They also know that if they write you a ticket that you are going to go back to the US and never pay the fine for the ticket. The system they have really works. Oh yeah, and don't get smart with them.... the fine goes up when you mouth off to them! ;)

Sorry..... soap box strikes again!!!! ;D ;D ;D

Yea i guess il have to just hide it off the trail and hope no one tries to take a bat to it or soemthing...maybe put a little bit of camo netting over it :) Thanks guys ;)

Get yourself a good dog to take with you. He'll be tired enough when you get there,he'll be glad to stay and guard the bike while you detect.

i always park my jeep where i can see it,, sometimes straight into the farmers field, better to be safe than sorry,, but hey camoflage with sheet or netting and chain to a good tree, or lean the bike on a tree detect that area, where still near the bike then move the bike further down, thus its always near, then when your finnished the bike is at hand for you to ride off quicker than haveing to go all the way back for it,. good luck.

Well, no one touched my bike but i got 4 flat tires while i was there >:( Those cat briars are crazy! wouldnt think a thorn would puncture a tire but they do :-\ I wonder if theres any way to prevent a flat?

They make some stuff that you use to inflate bike tries with so they become puncture proof, can't think of the name at the moment.

Paul

The tire was actually supposed to be "self sealing" so if its pops it will still hold air....its called "slime" doesnt work for sh*t >:( I was thinking about putting a piece of thin sheet metal between the tire and tube, would that work?

There may be other possibilities, I would guess the sheet metal wouldn't be too effective. Maybe you could try filling the tire with some expanding foam product like "great stuff" or similar, something that would support your weight, fill evenly and not escape through a small puncture. Never know, maybe something like polystyrene would solve it. Seems to me there used to be some sort of flatless tires for bikes a few years back, did they quit making them?

-Mike

wow, turns out they make thorn resistant tubes ::) guess ill have to look harder next time, i think id still pop one though so im gonna look around for the toughest tire around ;D

Well there is a bright side.
If someone steals your bike you can do what Pee Wee Herman did in an old movie.
Walk into a Biker Bar and say "Someone stole my bike" All those sympathetic bikers
would load you up on free drinks.
