I found this today while digging in a field that was a strawberry farm from the 1910's through the 1950's. It kind of fell apart when I was trying to clean it. I don't have a clue what it is, although I was thinking it was part of a horse harness or something. Anyone know what this is?

If it was smaller I'd say battered and fried calamari or sweetbreads. Rusty chain?

Needs some electrolysis. Chain from animal trap?

Hello PimpLenin,
I think bigcypresshunter hit the nail on the head.

I trapped for a few seasons, and it sure looks like trap chains to me.

Now, go back and find the traps!

I am going to try and clean this with electrolysis (first time trying it) and if it comes out better I will post another picture. As far as the "glob" rust effect, I've found that a lot of the iron stuff I dig. I find a lot of old farm equipment bits and pieces and it does that usually on the ends of the object. Must be some weird effect done by the soil conditions, etc. where I live.

LOL, that's some yucky, icky looking rust. You must be digging in somebody's doggie doo burial site. ::)

MY GRANDFATHER PLOWED FIELDS AND THIS COULD BE PLOW CHAINS--I WAS VERY YOUNG BUT I REMEMBER A LOT OF CHAINS WITH BIG LOOPS AS THOSE

Sure looks like it is a choke chain collar for a dog. Notice that the big ring and chain slide thru the other big ring....

minerals in the ground and water can cause odd lumping type rust---they "lock up" with the rust (oxide) during the rusting process forming odd "knots" and lumps and such. ---varies from place to place how bad it happens---mainly due to the differant chem make ups of the area. Ivan

Well, lets look at the consensus.

Half think that it looks like a chain encased in dog dodo, and the other half believes its to be a chain.

What if there is a compromise?

;D

Exactly what I was thinking.

(Had to be a rather large dog, though)
