what is the orange material made of, in your opinion?
Seems like it might be an item where if your basement started to flood, the outside cap would rise and when rising would hit a contact to turn on a pump -or at least in that are of thought.
The other item looks like a gas related plumbing fitting, depends like the thread gauge and take a close look at the inside of the small port, is the inside of the small port tapered ?

I'm pretty sure jerseyjack got the bottom picture correct, looks like a valve from an old steam radiator. I found a picture.. The material seems like it was spongy at some point but it's hard as a rock now, the same material is on the inside to. The place i found it at was built in 1909, it's no longer there, it still looks like a picture tube to me or fuse of some kind....I'm stumped$T2eC16ZHJGUFFh)rg8GkBSbs9msPCw~~60_12.jpg
