Relic Hunting
Found this today in the woods behind my house. We live in an area of central Va. fought over during the civil war so we've pulled a lot of cw relics out of the ground. This is approximately an inch or so in diameter and appears to be a central disc of aluminum or other whitish metal coated or electroplated in pewter or brass or some other darker, soft metal. On one side is the following text: "Entered according to act of congress in the year 1848 by Wm C Brown in the clerks office" There is then a large chunk of the surface metal missing but in the lower left area there are the letters: "Dist----". On the obverse is what appears to be a right profile of a person in a military uniform with an epaullette and a broad lapel on the jacket. I hope somebody out there can help cause this is pretty cool!

Your find is a political medal issued for the 1848 campaign of Whig presidential candidate General Zachary Taylor.

(I hesitate to mention it, but if it were in nice condition it would be worth about $350.)
