Re: What The Heck Kind of Rock Is This?

Go outside and try throwing it through the neighbors window. If the window breaks, its not a meteorite. It's a little known fact that meteorites won't break glass.............OK I have no idea really. :dontknow: Very interesting looking rock though. Please don't try my suggestion above!! :tongue3: :laughing7: Your neighbor would probably come outside and hit you on the head with a hammer :violent1:

Hey ORN, have you checked it out alongside any samples of meteorites on any of the many meteorite websites, such as http://www.meteorite.com/Meteorite_Identification.htm , a very informative website with a plethora of links ?? I’d be interested to learn what you got there !!

Yep looks like magnetite. However, should have a black streak. Check it again for streak in the bathroom.

Honey, what taking you so long in the bathroom?
I am checking for a black streak honey.
Sweetie- your skid marks are usually brown not black. :D :D :D

one way to get a definitive answer is to cut it in half. if it's from outer space it'll have a crystalized structure

Please try looking up "bog iron" in Wikipedia. It strongly resembles what you have. Also (a dumb question) you are doing the streak test on the unglazed back of the porcelian? Hardly anything leaves a streak on the glazed side.

I found a huge specimen like yours, probably weighs 20lbs. I will have to see what mine is too. I assumed it was lodestone or some type of surface iron, perhaps even a meteorite.

Re: What The Heck Kind of Rock Is This?

I've found Magnetite rocks in my area that a small magnet will stick to enough, so doesn't fall off. Magnetite doesn't give a metal signal like a meteorite (if magnetic). Manual balancing gold detectors sound off from Magnetite.
