???

I was hiking at a new place and tripped and busted my 'hind end' on something. I looked down and upon close inspection it looked like old pitted iron..and round... I am no metal expert but I dit want to remove it so no one else would trip and possibly hurt themselves.

This area used to be a heavy area of travel from the 1830's until today as a hiking trail onthe banks of a river. This location even had major significance during the Civil War. There was at least one home on site in the 1800's, but probably more until the later part of the 20th century (none now other than a lone fireplace from an old old house that once stood on the property).

The object is about 4 feet long and weighs a HEAVY 20-30 pounds. I have no clue how to clean this as of now to just see if this is a pipe...or something else. Again, the metal looks like pitted iron..but there is an exact round opening on one side and it looks like the other sie may have rusted away a bit...there is a solid layer of mud running right through it..I will get better pictures tommorrow.

If this is just an old lead pipe..am I now going to die from exposure and lots of handling and attempted cleaning ..... :dontknow:

Thanks for any help

If it turns out to be an old pipe I wil throw it away accordingly...there is enough trash around that property..so I will do a solid and help clean at least 1 piece out

One more picture of it...

I'm curious if it just a pipe why the heck is it so heavy?

It looks like a cast iron water pipe or gas line. not lead.

using historic aerials dot com I was able to see that there was a house in that general vicinity until 1972.

So I guess it was put there sometime between 1838 and 1972 :laughing7:

T'was a rather nice looking house from the air it appears.

Built between 1955-1960 and demolished between 1972-1978

Tis a shame it didn't last too long.

Then again, it may not even be the correct house..but I believe its in the same area

That aerials website is fantastic

Its practically worthless but the rusting iron helps put minerals in the soil. Here and in the Carribean we put rusting metal around bannana plants.

Have you ruled out an old rifle barrel?

For hunting dinosaurs? :laughing7:
I was thinking along the lines of an old 50+cal or shotgun... Looks awful thick-walled to be a simple iron pipe..

Metal conduit pipe is thin but galvanized steel pipe like pictured is thick walled. Thick enough to be threaded. Barrel is a good idea but you probably missed the part where he says its 4 feet long.

Yeah, I did....

I did have an old 8 guage barrel once that was 4 ft long... My dad used it as a property boundary stake. :dontknow:

My buddy found an old 4 gauge abandoned in an old boat in the Everglades. It was from the bird marketing days and probably over 4 feet long.

Check this out, pic i found online..
