What the heck is this?

Went metal detecting today at a friends home...can you identify the object in the following photos? It's some kind of ring that is hinged and opens. It's 5/8" inside diameter, 3/4" out side diameter and 1/2" deep. (4 photos)

Is the hinge spring loaded?
Are there any markings on the inside?

Looks like an ear ring. one of the old clamp on ones that were popular in the 60's

I don't think the hinge is spring loaded although it is hard to tell because of the corrosion. There are NO marking on the inside that I can tell.
