It may be some sort of belay device..or part of one.

The fact that it is serial numbered says a lot. It has a very specific and dedicated purpose. Interesting find!

I'm guessing something from the logging industry, I get the feeling it was used in conjunction with wire rope or cable, possibly some sort of choker for logs.

Where at, which mountains the reason I ask is we can rule out some possibilities. If no logging in those areas,or no climbing activities, myself I think its one of those newfangled nose rings or earrings kids are wearing nowadays.:tongue3::laughing7:

What are the numbers on the side of it I can't make them out maybe someone can track it down that way.

Is there a power line nearby? Could be something used by a construction company putting up utility lines.

There's a thing called Google reverse image where you can ask Google, but I don't know how to use it.

If it was up by Big Bear it could be something to do with the ski lifts.

Could be part of the parachute mechanism that was attached to D. B. Cooper's chute. Nice find... any money nearby?

Gut instinct, some kind of keeperless cargo hook. Maybe for carrying high tension electric lines from tower to tower. The top of the ? shape and the pivot hole are inline to support weight and the barb in the hole would prevent a swinging load from falling loose. Possibly from a Helo winch. The parallel tangs may have been actuated by a lock/remote release mechanism. Looks like forged aluminum, light and strong.
