WHAT THE HECK DID I JUST FIND? SOLVED

[Old Rusty Nails]

I found this yesterday along an old stage coach route.

It measures 5 1/4" W x 3" H. The opening at the top is 1 1/2" and has a notch where something obviously latched in. There's a lip on the side that looks like it's made to attach the entire piece on to something.

Any Clues??

I think it could be one of those lamps that they used to put near washouts or bad roads for travelers to see ar night....I dont think it was for a stage coach...it would need a filler hole .....

otherwise it looks like that thing on my lawnmower that gets real hot and you know not to touch it....

Bottom half of an oil lantern. There would have been a wick device that twisted onto where the hole is that could advance the wick as it burned down and adjusted the brightness. That device would have held a glass or metal diffuser. The metal on the back would slip into a flat loop on a post or something to support the lantern. Like a CB handle holder. It may have been an oil can insert for a larger lantern that had a glass globe in a cage. It looks commercial and not household.

My 2 cents. No matter what, thats a cool thing.

I'm with GL on this...an old smudge pot...thats what they were called around here. Looks like the blackening would have been from burnt kerosene.
