A friend of mine eyeballed this in a farm field here in the Shenandoah valley of VA a while back. It is solid iron and weighs about 10lbs we think. It has casting marks and what appears to be a broken bolt in the end of it. It also has an imprint of a tag with some numbers on it that I think was on the form. Could this be some type of counter weight? If so what to? We have no clue. Thanks for any help. egg 1.webpegg 2.webpegg 3.webpegg 4.webp

Possibly a governor flyball from an old steam engine used for farm equipment? ...although I don't recall seeing any that were other than round...
antique hit miss engine counterweight - Google Search

Thanks for the suggestion, but I think it is way to heavy for that. I have been around a lot of steam engines and I think it is way to big. I do think it is some kind of counter weight. Thanks for help.

It's that shape of an egg that leads me to believe it is a windmill weight, as they made them in a variety of shapes and images of them. Once I attended a water well trade show in Lubbock,Texas that was held at the Windmill Museum there. They had a display of windmill weights there in the shape of chickens, cattle, boats and others. Many windmills where manufactured in small shops through out the Midwest that are now defunct. I see there's a museum in Indiana also. You may want to show them what you have? Tours at Mid-America Windmill Museum - Kendallville, Indiana I can't find an egg shape weight on the web to verify that is for sure is what you have, but I do remember one of the ladies at the museum in Texas said that there are some example of weights that are very rare and very few of them are know to exist. I'm hoping what you found is a rare and valuable find.
