what should I pay

Have an opportunity to purchase a 1888 S morgan dollar in very fine. How much should I pay? I don't believe it to have been cleaned.

I would say that $85 to $120 would be a good price! The lower being VF-20 and the higher being VF-30 with great eye appeal (i.e. no major scratches or marks in the fields, on Miss Liberty's face or on the Eagle). I would try to avoid a specimen with rim dings and dents but if it has them and you need it as a filler coin for a set (collection), then offer less than the VF-20 price and give the reasoning for the lower offer.

If you can buy that coin for 70 go for it...even in only g4 condition it sells for 75

Ok so I bought it now can anyone give me some good news about what it might be worth to the right person?

IMHO, the coin appears that it might squeak by with an EF-40 Net grade instead of a VF as the Reverse appears to be a solid AU and the Obverse appears to be at the least a VF-35. That being said, I believe you could get $140 to $150 for the coin without much debate on the price. If you decide to go in an auction venue such as eBay, the price it may fetch could be anywhere from $100 to $175 (you will note this if you view the Sold Listings on eBay) as it is dependant upon the mood and wants of the bidders, the quality of the pictures posted in the listing, what period of the week it is up for auction and what time of day/night the auction ends.

Very nice Morgan, congrats.......concerning the grade, both sides are identical in grade, (not split VF/AU).....This dollar is a solid AU-50. Nice job!

HH all!

Greg

I agree ^. In fact, I'd put it in AU53-55 range. Very nice! You got a great deal!

With the amount of wear on Miss Liberty's hair between her' ear and Crown and the curls of her' hair South and Southeast of her' ear, the Obverse is definitely not AU! See the pics cropped and edited for contrast and brightness. I grant you that after zooming in with the edited pics, the Obverse appears to be more of an EF-40 but not an AU! That being said, the coin would probably Net grade at EF-45 but if graded by PCGS or NGC, the Graders might give it a bump to AU-50 due to it being somewhat of a Key Date.

Drew, You took some very nice and clear crisp pictures for posting here. I seldom see pictures of coins this clear here.

Now, what it is worth will ALWAYS be whether you're buying, or selling. Coin dealing is a rough game.
