What should I offer on silver dimes?

My post office clerk says she got 17 pre-1964 silver dimes several weeks ago.

She and her DH thought they might be worth a fortune, but all of the coin shops and gold buying shops offered her 60 cents each for them.

I want to be fair, but I also want to get as good as price as possible if she sells them to me.

What do I offer? 20X face? 21X face? Less?

What would you pay for 17 common silver dimes in circulated condition?

Thanks!

At today's price they are worth $2.14 each.

Offer her $1.25 each and negotiate from there. If you are interested in accumulating some silver and holding it a while, I would pay up to melt price, but no more.

2.14 today exactly right, 1.25 is very fair. You both know what the store will give you for it. They made better than the previous offer and you get silver for less than spot.
Having said that, I would go to near spot price if push came to shove,, not more though.

boy, the coin shops in your area are ripping people off. What would they charge if you wanted to buy one from them?

Well packer you are dead on,, I was thinkin that too, must be a small town with no other game.. But you know they will probably sell it for 7$ -I mean they are probably ancient 1964s huh?

I pay from 1.30 to 1.50 unless i can get a bunch at once. If you resell them you arent going to unload them easily at spot so you need to leave yourself a little wiggle room , and goodness forbid you sell them on feebay/ paypal then you need to figure in their 12% commision as well.

Re: What should I offer on silver dimes? UPDATE

Just as a follow up:

I offered the clerk $33 for the 17 dimes. "We're going to keep them. They might be worth something someday" she replied.

While I wish she would have sold them to me, I'm not sure that $63 dollars would have bought them. Now that I think about it, I doubt $93 would have either.

She is a super nice person, so I'm glad she got them in change from a customer.

Nonetheless, thank you all for your replies!!!! I have definitely learned some stuff, and that will help me down the road when I run into this again.
