what sets off

A diamond detector besides a diamond?

shaman15771 me too. I have two diamond testers and some crystals I have sets it up in the red. I didn't thing quartz was supposed to put it up anyway. So I hope someone will answer your question. I know mine works on a diamond as I have checked some known diamond rings with them. Worked every time on diamond rings.

Sometimes I will get a false reading just temporarily from quartz on my tester which is a RS MIZAR Diamond Tech Pro tester model Prestige Series II instrument but if I remove the tester from gem and recheck, it will not test positive.

A lot of things can on occasion be picked up. I've seen CZ and topaz, but I rarely use one. They're not really useful for rough specimens IMO.

Moissanite, a synthetic stone that copies diamond. Had to read around a bit but all the info points the same way. I don't deal with diamonds but I do understand the testing methods.

Thanks all. My son insisted on the diamond detector. I tried to tell him that there were no kimbellite pipes around here, but he insisted. LOL Anyway, keep getting positive from what I KNOW is quartz and not sure why. Some are repeated, and don't test positive again, a few others do keep testing positive. My diamond tests fine on it. ???? Although, I suppose anything is possible.

From what I understand of diamond testers is that they perform a thermal conductivity check of the item in question. Diamond has a very high conductive index in that if you had a diamond frying pan your cooking surface would be the same temperature as the burner in seconds where as aluminum or cooper take a minute to come to the same heat. In aerospace its kind of one of the holy grails for building material for space craft.

An interesting chart can be found here : Thermal Conductivity

I could be wrong here but I'm thinking my tester may test the speed of light through the stone, with the refractive index of 2.7 for a diamond divided into the speed of light 186,000 miles per second would be approx. 70,000 miles per second for the speed of light thru a diamond. Of course I've been wrong before and will be so in the future.

From what I've been able to read for that tester it is a thermal tester. There are other sites that refer to the same device but this link was clearest even if it is an advertisement : https://www.etsy.com/listing/156368..._language=en&gclid=CO3K8dvvhsICFWxp7AodgQwAAQ
I read the owners manual as well and while it does not state the method of measurement it does indicate that it is a thermal device in that it requires warm up time and that the local temperature be within a specified range.

The only refractive testing I've ever read about for diamonds and other clear gemstones involves the use of solutions that have the same refractive index as the material being tested. One puts the stone in question into the solution and if the refractive index is the same the stone will effectively disappear from view. Any other material will remain visible.
Looking around I have noted there are a few electronic Index meters. As I've said I don't deal with diamonds :) I just understand testing a bit.

DD is right, some measure electrical conductivity to I believe.

The testers for Moissanite check for conductivity from what I've read. There is also a class of natural diamonds that have boron in their make up and will test as false if your not aware of the stone.
