Only you know or can get the history of the area...

Was it farmland at one time?

Is it a celler hole?

If you are willing to desclose the exact location maybe we can help out more...

Probably the same thing that this circle was. I asked the same question in 2005. No answers then. :icon_scratch:

Could be moss covered rocks in a big circle. Worth detecting?

Could be ? Either it is or it is not. Is it stacked stone like pic lisa posted or is it natural formation?

In California we have arastras that look like that. They were round areas with a grinding rock in the center, a horizontal pole to hitch a horse to, and the horse walked around the outside to turn the grinding wheel. Here they were used to grind up ore for the gold mines but maybe in other areas they were used to grind grain, etc.

Old hand dug cisterns are always round like that. Too big for a well and wrong shape for a cellar hole. Monty

Yep could be a water cistern to collect rain water. Gutters from house may run into it and not far away.

One more possibility is that if you're in rural farm country the circles could be from foundations for either a Silo or if smaller a Corn crib.

We have holes like that all over the area. Ours were created by natives who would pitch their "teepees" over the holes. Likely Guy could explain this better.

WOW! Those are all great ideas. If it were a cistern chances are some kids could have thrown some Penny's in. Or maybe a house was near by, How far would a house have been? Like the rock piles...there are no fields near by now but may have been 100 years ago. Thanks for the input!

I know a guy who might know. His family owned that property. I'll try to call him this week.

I was referrimng to the original picture but the Indian TP thing sounds reasonable since they often camped in the same place year after year. Over time they may have worn a indentation in the ground but I haven't seen one lined with rocks before. Monty

The 'teepee thing' that Drache and now Monty refer to is called variously a 'Kickwillie' or 'Keekwillie' or 'Quiggly' hole. They were semi-subterranean pit houses, pitched up with small logs and covered with bark and sod. The entrance also served as the exit for the smoke.

To the best of my knowledge however, they were only constructed in the Pacific north-west and never employed the use of stones.

Actually... they wouldnt have slept in a "hole in the groud" any more than you would pitch a tent in a "hole"... it fills with water and everything is soaked if it rains.

Teepee rings are found all over the west - they were rings of stones that indicated where the camp had been, used to weigh down (anchor) the edges of the teepee structure. I've never seen teepee rings that are big "piles"of stones, just the rings. I think it might be impossible to find a teepee ring in a heavily foilaged area...

Here is one from outside Yellowstone Park...

I do NOT think you have found a teepee ring... and NOT a grave site either... graves were covered with rocks, not surrounded with rocks.
