What made this hole ?

My step father told me about a mountain in NC where there was a knife carved in a big rock and if you followed the knife you would find a tree with marks on it and near the tree was a consealed shaft. H e also described a funny looking hole near the top of the mountain,this is a picture of the hole,I could not look when I went there very much because a hunting club leases it and will not consent a search. the hole is in a rock big as a house and has piles of rocks all around it.please give me a idea from the pictures what made the hole and what could the rocks mean.

I'm guessing it's fairly old, so any kind of tooling marks are already washed away. My first though, was becuase its' next to a creek, it must of been some kind of hole to keep something from 'turning'. You should look on the other side to see it there's anything over there. Even do some metal hunting too.

Edit: Sorry, I imaging the creek. But, perhaps look lower down the hill to see if it's some kind of Old fashioned skyway tower... also look up the hill too.

Also, put a stong magnet on the end of a string and fish the hole with it. see if anything turns up.

My guess is a post was there for a cable tram.
