Detector(s) used
WHITES COINMASTER
Primary Interest:
Metal Detecting
so my coin master got stolen recently in portland oregon. I live on the coast and and it rains 230+ days a year here. I hunt on the beach and in the woods. I'm looking for something water resistant or water proof that would work on dirt and sand well. my budget is about $400. I replaced my stolen detector with a used fortune hunter for now… so suggestions on what to get and why please. thanks a ton folks.

I would look around and check the classifieds to see if you can pick up a used AT Pro. That should be close to your price range, waterproof and good for woods and field hunting

I don't have an AT Pro , but Susan is on the right track, I believe ...............

Get a second hand Sovereign GT, or perhaps an earlier model, most detectors are made water resistant. For that price, you might be able to find an Explorer XS, if you can, get that! In any case, I would go second hand.

Agreed. Craigslist or check the members classified or sponsoring vendors, here. Should be able to get ATPro, used, in your price range.

I saw a nice AT Pro for $425 on one of the "other" MD forum sites.

The AT Pro wouldn't be a good choice if you hunt the wet ocean sand. I agree with Detector Wars, get a used Minelab Sov or Explorer.

thanks for all the great advice. i get my tax return soon, so i need to make the choice between a used at pro and a coin master gt.

I've seen Garrett AT Pros selling used recently for only $400. Submersible to 10 feet. It has a manual ground balance for dealing with very mineralized soil. It will way outdo a Coinmaster or Fortune Hunter. Best wishes, George (MN)

There is a big detecting club in Portland. Many of them should be able to tell you what works best in that soil. Best wishes, George (MN)

ASTORIA, I too have an old White's Coinmaster that I really love, cause it has been so reliable through the years. It's now my backup detector though cause I just got my new AT Pro, and it's ..... AWESOME!!! It's durable, accurate, & a blast to use - definitely waterproof, as it is totally submergible (with the right headphones) to 10 ft. (though I've heard from others that it's not too great in salt water). Truly an all-terrain machine. I'm sure there are lots of other choices, as others will share with you on this site, but I'm a believer in the AT Pro ... and it won't break the bank buyin it - happy hunting!

Add another AT Pro to the likes

Throw a used MX-5 into the mix that would be close to your price range. If you liked the coinmaster you will love the MX-5. It has a beach setting also.
