I am a stonecutter and have never seen anything like this, to me it seems more like some sort of fossilized remains?

A hardened bag of cement?

Could be clay, cement, or a fossil. I have never seen a rock like this either.

Looks a lot like some plant fossils I've seen ( often of limestone but not always). However without any scale I feel a little silly saying that since I don't know if it's 3"s long or 3' long.

PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING ITEMS IN "WHAT IS IT?"

IMPORTANT!

When posting in "What Is It?", please give members the information they need to help identify your find:

1. Post sharp closeup photos of both the front and the back.

2. State the actual size of the item. Also, if possible, put something with it in the photo for scale: a common U.S. coin, a ruler, etc.
...
etc...
etc...

They continuously post random items with nothing more than an emoticon.

You'd think they'd have a clue by now.
You need lots of help ? Then offer a little help.
Three or four paragraphs describing the items isn't too much to ask.

You'd think a mod would have taken notice.

If it was that fossil wouldn't it be in slate or a sedimentary rock and not like a bone fossil, a plant fossil wouldn't have fossilized that way.

First, have to agree with ''maxpower'' definitely a Calamite (equistum columnare). Secondly, they can be found whole as usa1 has presented.

They can also be found in matrix and have the matrix cleaned off.
