I don't know what this is but is sure is pretty!
Long story short, I live in Lane County, Oregon. The very top portion of this rock was sticking up and caught my attention. After 5 hours of digging, and much more muscle, I finally unearthed it. This property has been inhabited since 1909, when the first structure was erected. So I cannot be certain that it wasn't moved here from somewhere else. Although at 300+ lbs., I can't imagine it moving very far.

So my questions are:
What the heck kind of rock is it? (I have been told maybe Jasper?)
Would it hurt the value if I broke it apart?
What might I find if I do?
I really just want to know more about it, your opinions on what I should do with it and so forth.
Any help would be appreciated! DSC_0016.JPG

Looks like agate/chalcedony. I would not break it up for now. They are really hard to get that size. The blue green can be from copper minerals. Lots of volcanic activety in your neck of the woods.

Thank you skeeterd, I agree!
The color reminded me of a penny that has been sitting out in the weather, smokey.

Something told me that I shouldn't break it up, but it is oh so tempting!

I wouldn't break it. Looks like agate, can't be sure . A geologist up close would confirm . Gorgeous specimen. I have found some nice ones in past ,but resisted breaking them. Some ended up on a water saw though.

YAY! After finally finding a rock hound extraordinaire, I am told that it is "the biggest piece of Mohawk Valley Jasper" that he has ever seen! I want to thank everyone for their thoughts. I am so glad that I found this site. I am back off to digging, I have the itch now. Cheers!

P.S. I almost forgot, he told me that it could go from anywhere from $4-$7 a pound. BUT being this is a solid piece and so large; "Who knows to the right person".
