I have looked in my rock and minerals book to see what it is and there are a few choices. Some pieces have small holes in them also. There is a much larger piece that is part of a stone wall in my backyard. The rocks can chip but they are rather hard. There is a nickel in the one photo for size reference and you can see the small holes in the other. I am wondering if these have been brought here by someone or not. They did do construction and move things around so who knows.

white quartz as far as I can see. We have it all over where I live, some rocks and some boulders. Had a friend who busted a baseball size quartz rock in half he found in NY. It had a small vein of gold going right through the middle of it.

That is amazing now you have given me ideas. I did try to smash one open once by throwing it against another larger rock. They are very hard to crank open though. I'm going to see what some more people have to say then I will call this case closed.
