what kind of ore

or metal? has a black, ropey appearance inside of quartz? Have been finding this stuff in quartz, but not sure what it is. It is magnetic and very hard, diamond wheel has a hard time with it. It polishes down to metallic bright silver color.

hard to say what it is without pic's. before and after cutting. that's like saying my car has a funny sound what is it? lol

I picked up a piece (8") white quartz in Colorado this week end. It resembles your description. My rock was sheared at one of the crevices and showed the other mineral squeezing through the quartz.. It appeared to be iron that solidified either at the same time as the quartz or forced it way through at some stage. At the shear area I could see the reds and blacks but at the top (?) the color was black.
What made me think the black mineral forced it's way through the quartz was it is like thin sheets.
I'll test for iron. It looked like it would make interesting cabs.

I would guess magnetite, which is strongly magnetic.

any ideas on what type of mineral or metal this might be?

non magnetic ... decent weight .. i tried the poor mans silver acid test with mustard but not sure if it worked or not..



any help would be great.

Axgar, can you scratch it with a knife? if rubbed against an unglazed piece of porcelain, what colour do you get?

i could not really scratch it at all.

and i got a darkish grey / pencil lead like color

Could be Pyrite, which gives a blackish colour. Seems to fit from the pictures, but that to can be misleading.
Read up on it.

Thank you Eu_citzen ... I got my silver test kit the other day and was sad to see no silver reaction .. it just fizzed a bit and no color change... so i am thinking some sort of shiny pyrite or Lever-rite there kind of rock.
