I found this button on one of my older house sights. It reminds me of a flat button, but it is only one piece and is domed. It has a faint eagle on it and stars on the back. Does any body know what kind of military button this is or how old it could be?

I’m sorry for the poor condition, it must have sat in the ground for a very long time.

The closest match I can find is a 1821 to early 1830’s artillery button, AY203A2.
This is based on the picture and backmark description in Uniform Buttons of the United States 1776-1865 by Warren Tice. Pages 118 and 119.
I couldn’t find one online.

Could this be a less common variation, since nothing comes up online? What seems so weird about it is that on most US military buttons that I’ve seen, the eagle is looking to the left, but on mine it is looking to the right. There may be some faint writing on the back, but I won’t ever be able to read what it said.

Yeah. It looks almost as if the writing was stamped on and then the lines and stars were next. They've faded so much that it would be almost impossible to make out most of the characters.

I think a piece of the writing might say leavenworth, but I have no idea what or where that is.
