Hi all, I found this butt Plate a couple weeks ago. I have been trying to locate a gun that would
have used a butt plate like this one. As far as I can tell, it's from the 1700's and might be from a
French double barrel Muzzle loader shot gun. The back is almost 5 inches long, and the top is
4 1/2 inches long, if you bend it straight.

It has a pin hole in it, also has two screw holes, one of which would have been in the end of the
butt.

Hope someone knows what kind of Muzzle loader this came from.

Thanks for looking,
HH, Ringfinder

Definately a butt-plate. As to what from that is a harder question. Here's a site that sells reproductions and maybe you can spot one. As a rule of thumb, the longer the upper flange the older the firearm. That's a fairly long one and your early 1700 date may be correct. However (always a "however") the early ones were usually 1/3 or perhaps 1/4 as wide as they are tall. Yours appears narrow for a very early piece (and is also in beautiful shape!).

Check the buttplates & buttcaps section here:

The French Fusil "C" is similar, even has the flange for the pin as yours does. That's a trade musket (single barrel smoothbore)

The Brown Bess (First, Second or Third Long Land Pattern Musket) is pretty close, also.

Note this is a rough casting and hasn't been drilled for the screws.

Wow, Thanks for the information. I'll look at all the sites you gave me. I found this butt plate at an old Log cabin site. It must have been 10 inches in the ground and my Fisher F75 said it was a silver dollar, you gotta always dig those signals. LOL

Thanks Again, Ringfinder

Looks like a fowler buttplate, English or American. Could be anywhere from mid 1700's to early 1800's. Beautiful find.

Thanks Mojjax, it sure does look like your Brown Bess! What is the age of your muzzle loader?

Thanks to everyone who replied, I think it is a pretty neat find.
