What kind of detector should I buy?

Hi Crystal. Stick with any of the "brand" name detectors. Look for dealers in your area and try some out and see what you like. You can find them anywhere from $100.00 to over $1000.00. A good pair of headphones are important. The dealer you deal with should give you some freebies. Most do. Read alot of the old posts on this forum. There is alot of info available to you right here. Stick with it and have fun. You've chosen a great pastime. But I must warn you it can become quite addicting. But none of us seem to care!

Whites MXT, it's a good all around detector. I do real good coin detecting with it.

What ever you do, do not get a Treasure Hunter. i am new to this also, and everyone said they are junk. So I have now ordered a Ace 250 which cost me $199 on eBay. It comes with a free carry bag, headphones, apron, and 2 books. i will let you know what it is like when i get it, but from the way it sounds, a lot of these pros on this site have this detector. it may not be the main one they use, but started out with. I looked on the internet and i could not find 1 bad thing said about the Garrett Ace 250. Check it out. ;D

I did a lot of research when I bought my Advantage. I had a price range pretty much set as well as an idea of what I was gonna use it for. I figure learning manual GBing and how to listen would be good to know so no meter.
On the other hand, brand and after market coils and parts are important too, but maybe not so much with entry level. Just read the forums and pay attention to the posts from experienced detectorist and don't buy into the dealers and manufacturers hype.
With this hobby, research is everything from buying to hunting and everything in between.

;D
