I found a coin in my back yard. I thought it was a penny when I first picked it up but after washing if I realized it was a very old coin of some kind. I don't know what kind of metal it is but it looks kind of coppery and I think I can count 13 stars around the outside perimeter and I'm fairly certain it says 1801. It shows a picture of a ladies' head on the front and on the back it isn't really clear enough to make out the details. It is the same size as our modern day nickel. I have pictures of the coin but they are too large to put in the post and I couldn't figure out how to crop them. I would be happy to send the pictures by email if that would help. Thank you in advance for any information you can give.

Sherry..you sure it says 1801 and not 1831?..If its 1831 then it sounds like a half cent...they didn;t make them in 1801.

Sherry's coin is a 1901 Liberty ("V") Nickel - she sent me pics offline.
