I've heard before that they were slugs. I've found some just like that as a kid in Texas but don't know the type of gun used to fire.

I'm pretty sure that's rifling marks from being fired.
Not all guns are rifled the same.

It appears to be a post-civil-war era fired Maynard Rifle bullet, Model-1882. See the illustration below.
