I found this a couple weeks ago on some property near the VA/NC border. It looks pretty old but does have a primer. At first I was thinking 44 Magnum, but it seems to be shorter based on comparison photos I found on the web.

Here are some pics next to a 45 ACP. Unfortunately, the head stamp is pretty roached.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

It could be a .45 colt or it could be a .44-40 or a .44 special. If the bullet is lead and not jacketed then it shouldnt, wouldnt,be a magnum round

Thank you sir. I wasn't even thinking about the Magnum being jacketed. I think you are right with the 45 Colt or the 44 Special.

Unless it's a hand load, it's not a ,45 colt long, because that's the wrong bullet. My guess is .44-40. If you did a pencil rubbing of the head stamp, could you possibly read it?
