I found this at an old homestead site in central TX that was probably in use from the 1850 to 1920 timeframe. I have seen a number of Civil War era carbine sling buckles with these little 'teeth' on them but I have never seen this one. The 3 teeth are on a floating piece that rotates. Does anyone know exactly what this buckle went on, and its age? By the way I also found a beautiful model 1851 Federal sword belt plate at this cabin site on the same morning. Love this hobby!!!!

Because of the design I would say that it is from the general civil war era. The pointed tines on the buckle were pretty well phased out by the early 1870's. Bigcypresshunter is exactly right about the use of most of them (waist adjuster buckle) but I think that DCMatt is right about yours. There were SOME suspender buckles similar to yours that date back to the late 1850's.
