A few days ago, I was out doing a school, and I found this nice ring. When I first pulled it out of the ground, I thought that it had a name on the inside of the curl. Actually, it stated "1/20 Gold Filled & Sterling". I had never seen this inscription on a ring before. Do they use 10, 14, 18, or 24 karot gold in the mixture?

See pictures for what the ring looks like.

Thanks for your help.

I am not sure but I always thought that gold filled was another way of saying gold plated. I think you have gold plated over silver. I do not know what karat. Does it matter? Nice looking ring.

I found a beautiful ruby ring that is marked 925 THAI. It turns out mine is goldplated sterling (vermeil). http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,137816.0.html

Here is some information on gold filled jewelry from Wikipedia. Gold filled is much thicker than gold plated. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gold_filled_jewelry

Gold-filled jewelry (also called gold overlay) is composed of a solid layer of gold bonded with heat and pressure to a base metal such as brass. Some high quality gold-filled pieces have the look, luster, and beauty of 14 karat (58%) gold. By definition, the minimum layer of karat gold in an item stamped GF must equal at least 1/20 the weight of the total item. 1/20 12kt GF is the most common stamp you will find on gold-filled jewelry. 10kt and 14kt are also common karatages. Gold filled items, even with daily wear, can last five to 30 years but will eventually wear through. The gold layer on gold-plated jewelry varies greatly depending on manufacturer, so there is no single, simple comparison. Gold-filled items are 50 to 100,000 times thicker than regular gold plating, and 17 to 25,000 times thicker than heavy gold electroplate (sometimes stamped HGE or HGP -- usually found on flashy cubic zirconia "cocktail rings

So your answer would be 10k to 14k gold overlay on .925 silver base metal.

Thank you very much for the information. The ring in one of the nicer ones that I have pulled out of the ground in some time. I was thinking that it was probably 10k, but wasn't sure. Thanks again.

the karat weight is directly rated to what the maker decided they wanted to sell the ring for. typically the higher the karat the softer the ring.
