I am kind of curious:

Were matches kept in these to keep mice away out of them, so they couldn't chew on the matches, and start a fire? Even though it looks to be a pocket sized match holder?

My grandmother, born in 1917, would never keep "strike anywhere" wood matches anywhere but a steel box because mice could start a fire.

Lol. I'm sure these were to keep matches from the elements or to just look cool. From my experience mice usually go for the matchbox first. But yes i see the mouse taking the match n dragging it against the wall OMG!!!!

More to keep the box from being crushed while in your pocket.

If that one found, was in a pocket when crushed, they had a bad, bad day.
