I found this in a lake in New York. It is stone and has definitely been shaped. What is this?

Might have been a cabinet knob that rolled around and got ground down.

Are you sure it is stone?

It might be wood but it feels more like stone.

Is it heavy for it's size?

It looks like it was a button or a knob of some sort.

I am not sure what types of fossils are found in your area, but your item may be what is left of an anemone fossil.

Tpmetal, I think you might be right that it is clay.

The picture of the back has the real dark spot and if you enlarge that it looks like it had some metal attached there like a button would have.
