Could be the top to an ashes urn.

A definite maybe. Looking at the inside of the lid, there is
definitely evidence of some type of seal, but I'm leaning more towards
it coming off a very old sealed urn type container.

No doubt there were many early sailing ships that sunk in the area,
and this could have been the seal from a food or fresh water container
onboard one of those vessels.

Just a hunch..8-)

Wow! That sure is decorative and in pretty good condition. Please provide the size and type of metal (if known).

Could it be to top or foot of some sort of furniture maybe a large dresser or bed? I dont know just throwing it out there. But still a very nice and ornate find. Congrats.

something like this...

I have a Chinese bronze lamp with that exact same background design. My lamp is poorly executed and not the least bit old but also has the same patina. I think your piece is bronze, Chinese and not antique. I think the pattern is present day standard background for these types of objects. this is just an opinion based on very little internet research.
