Not much here to go on. Any other pics? Is it a pan a bucket a sewer cap off? What is it made of? What are we looking at? Other than what appears to be a dish with some wire scrap in the bottom

Agreed.

A upside down bell used to plug up a hole? Can it be removed to get a better look at it?

LOL that's how to ring in the new year

As others have noted, its difficult to know what we are looking at without more photos or information? Is this in the floor or walls or ceiling of the attic?

On a wild guess I would venture it might have been part of the chimney or exhaust for a wood burning stove......:dontknow:

Sorry there's not more to go on guys, I should have mentioned it's in a back corner of the attic floor.

oil stack that has been capped?

just positing a guess here...

Chimney hole...or something along the same lines...

It looks like an old glazed crock(earthenware pot)stuck in the hole where a pipe was???????????????????????

Good start, now, what is underneath that corner, meaning a kitchen, a bathroom when indoor plumbing was installed? like a vent tube, or what might have been a parlor? a chimney such as Squirrel mentioned, any sign of patchwork in the ceiling below? How many inches across is it, how deep, and as trdking asked, any idea what it is made of?, and in the picture, the attic floor "looks" like cement, although highly unlikely in an attic of course. A mystery. I like the "bell" kind of guess. Would something like that "not" be cool, and with markings on it?

Pull that what looks like a paint can out of the hole and open it.
