Dug this up in my parents' front flower bed. House was built in '68 and they bought it in the 90's. I have no clue what this is or how to clean it up without damaging it further. This is one of my first finds with the Fisher F2 I got for Christmas (I'm a rookie, you see). Almost looks like an old clothes iron. There's some sort of shiny paper-like substance that you'll notice. It flakes off very easily and is only in one particular section. Whatever this thing is, it is very heavy. Looks like an old clothes iron. The type that you heated up on the stove or by the fire before today's electric ones. Should be made out of cast iron. Electrolysis is a good way to clean it up. Good luck and keep hunting!

Nice relic find! :occasion14: I believe it is an old iron.

Old sad or otherwise called flat iron, used to iron clothes. Yours is probably 19th century. Clean 'er up and we can date it better.

Don't worry, you won't damage it at all. It's a solid piece of iron (Pun intended). Knock the rust off with a hammer and do electrolysis on it.

It is an old Flat Iron. You can wire brush it off, then spray it with a clear coat preservative. I have a number of them in my relic display case, and this method works very well. Thats a great relic.
