Get a nail, penny and a piece of glass. As well as a un-glossed piece of porcelain. See if the your finger nail will scratch it. If not turn to the penny, if not turn to the glass if not the nail. I'm not sure but my Audubon book points out hematite with iron oxide and that hematite with iron oxide can be different colors. But, that's what some of the pictures in my book point out.
Puns this the other day while digging on a site with the backhoe. I have no clue what it is. One pic of the whole thing and one close up of a spot that recently broke off. That spot has some red and orange colors to it my first thought was granite. But I'm thinking it's not. Any clue?

Looks to be a microcrystalline quartz nodule.
