What is this?

found this in one of our civil war sites, just wondering what it is? has numbers on back, ?887 looks to be made from brass, maybe a stop of some kind? 2 -3/4" long X 2" wide....come on help a guy out...

Hey Semopreacher,

Sorry I can't help you out but the ?887 could be a part number. I.E. just part of a much bigger machine. You'll probably have to go back out, find the rest of the parts and reassemble it before you'll be able to figure out what it was.
