Hello everyone,
I am new to metal detecting and have only been 2 times. I found this object and thought it was a divers weight. Unfortunately Diver weights were not as thick and were never made of anything except Lead. Searching for a few days, I am unable to find anything that indicates it is. Currious, we lightly knock of some of the oxidizing on the bottom to see if we can find anything. In the photo #1 where I am holding it, It looks like some figures there in the right top corner, Also looks like some MARK, on the left corner. ??? In Photo#2 it looks like, a 99's with a 1, can you see these numbers written in photo 1. Can you see numbers decayed but somewhat legible? It weighs 5 pounds, It is to heavy for lead, It is 3 6/8" x 3 6/8" on the base(the base is wider than the top, the top is a bit smaller 3" x 3"; it is 3 1/2" tall, with 1/4 inch slats. It is 1 7/8" thick. My metal detector is a Gold Century, it registers 50cent silver range. The object was found buried, I have taken to some local places and have not had any luck finding out what it is or having any tests on it. Only my second find, on my second day of metal detecting, So....I have really enjoyed hunting and plan to continue. Thanks Treasure Net for having me and I am looking forward to learning so much from my new friends. Thanks, huntergirl

Yes it looks like a lead divers weight.

Agree, diver's weight. Notches are to fit on a belt. Monty

Welcome to Treasure net. Did you find it near a beach? Looks like a lead weight. Hope you find a ton of good stuff this year!

I have a bunch of these old weights. (most folks use the soft weights now)

Anyhow, I started with a one pounder one cut in fourths (1/4 pound) and stuck it in the bottom of my wife's purse. A week later I hid the other quarter. I continued until I was at 1 3/4 pounds when my plot was discovered. It was funny watching her lug that thing around for a while.

I was glad she didn't whack me in the head with her purse...

All the diver weights photographs do not have slits only (holes thru them). Anyone have a photo of one like this?

Do you have a picture of one? All the ones I have seen are not this thick and have no notch for belt.

Thanks, Why does the metal detector go off on silver if it is lead??

My guess is that it's probably not too old, since it looks pretty much like the ones I posted, which are still for sale. However, that's only my guess.

Target ID is based on the conductivity of the target and is influenced by other factors: saltwater, mineralization, etc. As a result, not all ID readouts are accurate. I'm sure that other TNet members with more expertise can explain it better, and in greater detail, than I can.

They are very common, not worth anything but the lead...

Here is a photo of them on one of my belts. Happy hunting and welcome to TN!
