I found an old beat up coin a few months ago.

After soaking it in olive oil and working it for literaly months I finally made out the detail enough to find out what it is.

It's a 1830s canadian token of esteem.

The thing is... I can't find ANY information on it.

I figured that someone here would be able to figure out what this was issued for.

Can anyone tell me any information on this?

My picturs are the old ones of before the olive oil bath. I'll post new pictures later today. There is a lot more detail showing now and you can clearly make out the word esteem.

The "sword cross" in my old picture is actually the N.

I don't know that I would call it solved yet...

I've seen references that it might be a gaming counter :dontknow: - there were lots of different ones of those made.

It's far from solved.

It went from... What the hell is this thing... To... Now I know what it is, but what was it for and why was it issued.

I found that as well...

I just can't find ANY information on the coin other than it's Canadian from 1830s.

This is a tough one.

I REALLY want to know about this coin.

Found another reference - not sure if you have this one already:

CANADA Issuer: C. P. N. (or C.N.P.) Circa 1890?--#EX29947

Brass Token of Esteem 25mm. 4.94g.

Laureate head of George III or Washington, right.

Crowned arms; floral sprays below.
TOKEN OF ESTEEM

Baker #599

Good VF. A provisional date of circa 1890 is mentioned in Baker. The token appears similar to Hudson Bay Co. tokens of the same vintage. A satisfactory origin for this token has not been established. Reduced from: $18

Thanks. I did not see that.

"A satisfactory origin for this token has not been established."

I love that lol. It seems that no one can figure out where this thing came from or what it was issued for.

This is a tough one to solve.

With that reference saying possibly 1890s and saying it is similar to the Hudson's Bay Co.--- maybe they are thinking "CPN" is for this company:

The Canadian-Pacific Navigation Company was an important early steamship company that operated steamships on the coast of British Columbia and the Inside Passage of southeast Alaska. The company was founded in 1883 by John Irving (1854-1936), a prominent steamboat man, businessman, and politician of early British Columbia. In 1901 the company was purchased by the Canadian Pacific Railway, becoming the steamship division of the CPR.
