What is this thing?

Found this near an old abandoned cabin that goes back to the 1800s. Appears to be made out of brass and the circle in the middle seems to be copper. Looks like it was attached to something.

Try a few more pix and include some kind of scale (ruler). What does the material seem to be? Side pix. Bottom pix. The more info the more likely the identification.

May be a hand or foot warmer used with the fireplace. The copper plug is for expansion.

Are you sure it is made of brass? Does it attract a magnet? (not the copper area)
