I am going to say a door bell plate. Although it almost looks too old for that. Dont know what else it could be.

You're correct dg39 - It is ,without question, an antique door bell cover - late 19th century.

Compare to this one I found on-line which I think is exactly the same.

If you click on the link to robinson's antiques below the pic I posted, it'll show you the piece, which has been sold for an unknown price. The piece above it is for sale for $329.95. Apparently yours is bronze... so, the decor value should be up there someplace...

Yep!!! its a manual door bell that you turned with your fingers, my house was built in 1898 and had one, it mounted on the doorframe on the hinge side of the frame, I still have the bell

Bluezman thats a push pucker doorbell button, the manual one had a knob you turned
