I live in Northern California and in the area there is a dormant volcano (Mount St. Helena) and in the Pine Flat area there were mines way back in the day. This rock as well as many others which seem a little unusual have been in my yard for years. I cleaned up this rock a little and I was wondering if anyone could tell me what it is, or if it is valuable in any way. Thank you for any help you can give. rock 1.jpegrock 2.jpegrock 3.jpegrock 4.jpegrock 5.jpegrock 6.jpegrock 7.jpegrock 8.jpegrock 9.jpeg

molten chunk of Quartz most likely with inclusions of calcite.. A gemologist would love it An amalgomy of molten joy..

I looked at it even closer today and I did notice some sort of green color to it. What type of person do you think I could take it to to have it looked at closer?

id take it to a local gem shop.. prolly your best bet.. might be a little jade.. Jadeite is a pyroxene mineral with composition NaAlSi2O6 but without looking at it , and the composition id say its just Quartz but a gorgeous specimen.. id pay to have it on my coffee table.. being from the St Helen's area id guess its Quarts just bubbled up and spewen out ..lol

I'm trying to find a local geologist or gemologist to take a look at it to give me a little more information about it. I cleaned it up a little more and saw some things that really made me curious.

it looks like there was a shiny gold color in it was that the calcite showing

I'm not sure. I am having a hard time finding someone to take a look at it, I have wrote a couple geologists at local colleges but have not heard back. And there are not really any local gem shops in my area.

A public university with an earth sciences dept./lab can tell you just about anything
you want to know about your rock . Usually with no charge if you are a resident of
the same state .
