What is this? It screws off

I have no idea what this object is, it was found in the vicinity of an 1820 Matron Head Cent, and an 1898 medal, so would it be natural to assume its from the 19th century? The button part unscrews from the silvery part.

It looks like a top off an old toothpaste tube. I found an old metal Listerine Toothpaste tube and it had a similar top and plastic lid. I don't know what brand that one is though.

Any residue in the cap? I found a similar cap with a W&G on the top. It turned out to be the top from a tube of artists paint.
