What is this? Is this a nutting stone?

Can anyone identify this? It was found near ancient shell mounds and was in a location where Indians lived for thousands of years. It is not a fossil or an agate. Perhaps a nutting stone? The holes are ground down and are in different sizes. It was located in western Oregon where several tribes lived. How old could this be?

Nice one, whatever you want to call it. We call them pitstones where we find them (OH/KY/IN) and between myself and 3 or 4 friends we have hundreds of them. Some have holes as deep as yours, some are pitted on both sides, some on one side only, and rarely they have multiple "pits." Most of the ones we find are barely pitted, some you can hardly even see the indentation so I'm not sold on the theory that they were used for cracking nuts... who knows what they were used for. I personally pick up and keep every one I have ever found because they make a nice display.
