My girls and I went to the old skating rink for a few hours today, I looked around behind and to the sides of the building, next time I go I will start on the open area, mostly I just found junk, the only decent things I found were a 1958 wheatie and an unshot bullet, I could only get the one photo, on the one side it says 30-30 win, I left the bullet there cause I am not familiar with guns and bullets and was afraid to handle it to much or have it in my home, we also found the hole in the ground in the open area, the first photo of it is from above, the second is from inside, any ideas on what made the hole or why it is there?

Can't help with the hole but you might tell someone like an officer about the shell so no one get's hurt.

I have seen a rabbit running around that area before so maybe, I will tell my neighbor officer Ryan about the bullet when I can.

Hi: The 30.30 shell is a common caliber for deer hunting around there and was probably lost a long time ago by a hunter.
shells like this are very stable and unless it was like thrown in a stove or trash burner it won't just explode, but if you're uncomfortable around it turn it in to someone familiar with ammunition. I would say the hole if its 10 or more feet straight down it's not an animal burrow maybe vent from old septic tank.

The 30-30 shell is safe to handle unless you abuse it as stated above. I don't know about the hole, it doesnt seem to be round like it was drilled, but it is too narrow to be dug by hand. I don't think it is an animal hole though.

Not sure does look like it has been dug by something..hope you did not leave the bullet lay in the grass.Could go off if hit by a mower..
Old bullets are pretty stable and you can always turn them in to the police...

I did leave the bullet there behind and right up against the building, I will go and put it up somewhere as soon as I can.

I told my cop neighbor about the bullet and he said he would tell one of the other cops that works that area about it, that would be an interesting news report if someone was mowing and ran over it and set it off.

LOL... Thats a good one! :D

Seriously though. Sure looks like a critter hole. You did good with the bullet because you tought yer daughters to leave that kind of stuff alone! It's prolly safe to handle - but now your girls know to be carefull with stuff like that - IMO.

IMHO,the hole being 10-15 ft. deep would preclude its being a vent hole for a septic system or an animal burrow.

If the hole is located on lower ground it may have been cut by flowing water.Perhaps there is a cavern or a drain pipe under the hole.

Bullet finds are pretty common. I have found at least ten unfired bullets of all calibers in schoolyards this summer. If fact. I found one exactly like yours on Saturday.

http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,103998.0.html

Kids like to carry them around I guess, boys and their toys etc. If you feel really uncomforable having it, I would throw it away or bury it in your back yard. You could take it to the police, but that seems like it would be a hassle to me. All the best to you!!

It's always good to detect around critter holes as sometimes they pull up old coins buried deeply in the soil.

Smiles!

It seems that when alot of us are digging and scanning the ground we turn up much old ammunition both fired and unfired. A big part of my and others hobby is purposly searching and collecting old cartridges. To ease your minds about the danger of these unfired shell be aware that when not fired in a rifle or pistol were they some how "exploded" by themselves the projectile.(bullet) would only have the same danger as the shell"cartridge case". Think of all the house fires in homes where ammunition is kept. If all of it were as lethal as when fired in a gun we would lose 1000's of firemen and neighbors. Be happy out there and put a picture of your shell finds and a bunch of us will be eager to ID' them.

That hole could be hazardous to small animals such as kittens and small dogs. That thing should be filled in. It is an odd one. Doesn't look man-made and animals don't usually dig that deep. May have a big sink hole forming there. You're getting out so congrats to you for that.

I called and told City Hall about the hole and the lady said she would send someone out to look at it.

My aunt went to a garage sale and broke her ankle because of a hole.
They can be nasty, if not careful.Iwould think if you have a garage sale you make sure there are no holes around >:(

The hole looks allot like some I have seen where someone buried a stump or other wood during construction & 15-20 years later when they rotted you got a sink hole. I agree with throwing the bullet in the hole & bury it so someone else can find it in 50 years.
