i was doing a little dirt sniffing behind the house today and run across this little item in the center . yes the dangly thing .
it looks like some sort of picture frame and the chain and wing looking thing was attached to it . the strange thing is that the bar in the middle slides back and forth so I'm not for sure what it was for . if anyone has any idea I'd be proud to know .

thanks for the time and info.

wow...ummm....I have no idea to be honest. I would go out on a limb and say it could be part of a clock? but not sure of the size of the items. could you post a pic with a ruler or another easily identifiable object for size comparison? If the items are smaller the picture frame thingy may be a belt buckle? and the wing thing some kind of name plate, brooch, or pilot's wings?? This is just a guess. please post another pic with ruler. good luck with the ident. Sorry I couldn't help much.

voodoo the size of the big button is just the same size of a nickel and the chain was attached to it but it came off when my big hands tried to clean it lol. it's approx. 1.5 inches wide and 1.25 tall as it lays in the pic.

Could you post pics of the back of both items. Are you saying the frame piece is 1.5 x 1.25 inches?

here are two more pics one from the front with a ruler and one of the back .
the chain was attached but when I tried to clean it up and little bit the chain come off so it was hooked together as shown in the pic . and once again the center bar that looks like a j but I'm sure a piece is broken and missing but it slides back and forth in the medallion piece .
it has no writing anywhere on it .
hope this helps breezie .

and thanks, sorry I couldn't get the pics to rotate

definitely ART DECO and a brooch! I would say the sliding piece is an initial or a pointer as such to a picture that may have been in it?

My (wild as) thought is; possibly a calendar brooch. I often see wall calendars with a sliding indicator of some sort.

I had thought maybe the calendar thing also as I have seen them also and after some careful looking at it the center section has small tabs on the corners that can be bent out and the center removed but I wouldn't think you would do it to many times as they would break off being metal and all . I've been trying to show it to some older people that live here in my small town to see if it would ring a bell but nothing so far . thanks for the input everyone may have to put this one down as misc. lol

Possibly a Victorian style brooch. Sometimes these would come in "kits". You would have a frame ( like your square piece ) and a plain porcelain insert that you would hand paint yourself then put in the brooch. I had to research this type of brooch for my vintage shop. I have one in Silver though it has no slider. Just a guess on my part. But the surround is quite similar in style.

Scott, I'm sorry it took so long to get back to you, but for some reason I'm not receiving emails anymore for updates.

After seeing that second group of pics on the ruler, I think it is an Art Deco Picture Frame Brooch. The bar in the middle is what would keep the photo from falling out. Here's a pic of a similar one:
