what is this coin

A friend has this and asked me what it is, so because I don't know I am asking you all


how would one authenticate this by weight size and thickness?

27.468 grams is the standard for an 8 reales; proportionately less for lower denominations of 4, 2, 1 and 1/2 reales.

Neither thickness nor diameter is significant in attributing cob coins.
They come from a bar of silver then cut to the standard weight; therefore no two are alike.

Determining it's authentic is only one element of value. Other elements include condition, country of origin, assayers ID, year, mint location and demand.

Can you take better photos? Perhaps with natural lighting instead of incandescent? Can you include a quarter in the photo for scale? Looking at the photos, there doesn't appear to be any red flags. Tell your friend to get an actual chain instead of the leather rope.
