Spanish cob coin.
27.468 grams is the standard for an 8 reales; proportionately less for lower denominations of 4, 2, 1 and 1/2 reales.
Don....
PS: It would also have to test out at 93.1% fine silver as another step in the authentication process.

As always, educational reply. Thanks.

Neither thickness nor diameter is significant in attributing cob coins.
They come from a bar of silver then cut to the standard weight; therefore no two are alike.

Is that the mount, or does the coin look pretty round?

so we would go by silver content only?

if it is real , any idea of its value!

Determining it's authentic is only one element of value. Other elements include condition, country of origin, assayers ID, year, mint location and demand.

Can you take better photos? Perhaps with natural lighting instead of incandescent? Can you include a quarter in the photo for scale? Looking at the photos, there doesn't appear to be any red flags. Tell your friend to get an actual chain instead of the leather rope.
