WHAT IS THIS COIN ?? (BOMBER'S FIND ) HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HERE IS THE COIN BOMBER FOUND WHILE ( BOMBER, DESPLAINES_IL_ BOB, AND WEEBEE33 )WE WERE OUT.
IT WAS FOUND IN AN AREA OF A PARK THAT WAS USED AS A BAND SHELL BACK IN THE MID 50'S.
IT INDICTED A 5CENT RING ON MY XLT AND THE SAME ON WEEBEE33's DFX ( +24 TO +27 )
IT'S ABOUT THE SIZE OF A NICKEL AND LOOKS TO BE A HAMMERED COIN.
MOST IF THE WHEATIES ( NO SILVER ) WERE AT 4-4 1/2 " DEEP
ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU

The lions in the diagonally opposing quadrants of the Jerusalem cross represent the Kingdom of Leon while the castles signify the Kingdom of Castile,the coin is definitely Spanish.The tee shaped ends on the cross is probably the key to identifying the mint and date.

Found these pics. Some very close similarities These are 8 escudos. Yours appears to be 2 escudos.

Check out wakeforest.com for info and history. From what I can make of it yours is Peruvian mint PVA 1709 (?) the 7 ? 9

I can't say for sure, but it looks like a reproduction. I found several. Unless it is almost 24k gold or .900 + silver. Interesting find though.

The coin looks like a two maravedi (copper) piece from Lima, Peru dated 1709; minted during the first of two reigns of Philip, or Felipe, the V (5th). His first reign was between 1700 and 1724. He then abdicated to his son, Luis I, age 17, who died within a year. Philip V was restored to the throne and served a second term from 1724 to 1746.

Part of his coinage was minted in Lima, Peru. Your coin is dated 1709. The assayer's name was Cristobal Melgardjo who served only a one year term. On your coin, his signature is the "M" that appears on the reverse side within the "tic-tac-toe" upper right.

The cross in that configuration is called the Cross of Jerusalem. Two quadrants contain lions and two contain castles, representing Castile and Leon. Previously, Isabel and Ferdinand had unified Spain, when she was the Queen of Castile and Leon, while Ferdinand was the heir to the throne of Aragon. But I digress........

The R-V-M shown at the left of the date is part of HISPANIARVM, meaning 'of the Spains'; and the REX stands for 'King'.
You might consider taking it to a coin dealer, one who knows Colonial Spanish coinage and get it verified as authentic or not.

Spainish gold escudos coins were never 24 K they were 22.5K and the silver ReALES were never pure silver but did range from.908 to .958. It is according to who and where the coins came from ands where they were minted. I have never seen a COPPER REALE ANYTHING THAT WAS NOT sILVER.

Gold coins were called Escudos
Silver coins were called Reales
Copper coins were called Maravedis

The copper coins of King Philip (during this period of 1709) were of 1, 2 and 4 maravedis valuation. The reales were of 1/2, 1, 2, 4 and 8 denominations; and the gold escudos were minted in 4s and 8s.

One (inconclusive) way to test that "coin" (if it is a coin) is to weigh it. The 'real' weighed 3.433 grams gross and 3.194 grams fine. It consisted of 34 maravedis. The maravedis "vellon" was 2.4 grams copper and a very slight amount, if at all, of silver. These (copper) coins were also called 'billon'.
The maravedi silver content went to zero in the reign of Ferdinand VI (1746-1759).

There were no coppers minted in Lima during the 1700's! If its gold its a 2 escudo, silver a 2 reale. Coins of this assayer and time period were found on 1715 fleet wrecks. A 2 escudo weighs in at 5-7 grams a reale will weigh about the same. The M is the assayer Melgarejo. Get it looked at by a pro you cant tell a fake from a photo , unless of course you have the original in your possesion. Even then unless you know what to look for you would be hard pressed to know the fake. Try Dan Sedwicks web site. Hes an expert and great help.

Are you shore that aint a silver coin?
Looks to me like a 2 reaal of spain.
Old silver gets the same colour this coin has.
Also the pictures on the coin are too sharp for a copper coin.

I really think this is a silver coin

It looks lke pot metal to me, with the platng wearing off. Why dont you have the metal tested at a pawn or jewelry shop?
