Hi and I am hoping everyone is having a wonderful day. I am seeing if anyone may have a idea what this may be/used for. It is a very heavy cast iron architectural piece. Not sure what it is or what it was used as? It is around 28 inches tall. The figure in the center looks like a peasant. No markings on it. But I am thinking age being vicotian late 1800's to the early 1900's. But that is a guess. But I am thankful for all those who chime in on this with their input. Thanks in advance.

my guess is that it's from a piece of cast iron lawn furniture, possibly circa 1910

Here in New Orleans there is a lot of decorative cast iron. I've dealt with quite a bit doing renovations down here, and to me yours looks like it was meant to be seen from the one side only which makes me think it wouldn't be from a porch rail since both sides of a railing would typically be equally detailed, and it just doesn't look quite right for a bench or furniture, at least from what I'm used to seeing. My first thought was a fireplace screen, but it could also be from a window cover from a door or maybe a gate. is there any sign of it being broken out of a bigger piece? Any sign of attachment points?

On the top of the piece it looks like the two spots protrude does the bottom do that also?

Hi thank you all for the help so far. There is no broken pieces to show it was from maybe a bigger piece. It has the knobs on top and two on the bottom like it was meant to slide or be placed in something. I thought maybe a something as well from a cemetery or a shutter type thing for a window.

Any thoughts on the object at the feet of the robed figure?

Could there have been a staff in the hands?

I was thinking 'biblical' but I can't come up with anything similar.

Looks like the figure is warming his hands at a fire

I thought fire as well.

Possibly just an allegory of Winter?

That would make sense for a fireplace or radiator screen...

Especially for those whacky Victorians who saw symbolism in everything.

I'm guessing it was never used due to the poor casting of the face.

My first thought was part of a Victorian grave fence.

The little nubs on it are possibly meant to fit into holes in a railing or frame and then be welded or brazed over. I went out and looked at the railing on my porch to see if I could find the holes showing anywhere where parts were fit in, but the only one I could find to get a pic of is this one where a bottom support was fitted in. I've seen a lot that were done that way, I guess maybe it's easier to align everything into pre drilled holes than it would be to have to line each piece up seperately and have it all come out straight when it's done. I've never put any of it together though so that's just my thought on it....

Yeah I know it's rusty and could use some paint..... Summer time project....

the thing in the bottom left comer that some think is a fire seems right. I showed my friend a photo of the piece and she thought the thing at the bottom left was a bouquet of flowers being dropped off. The face looks to me like a demon, haha! I appreciate all the cool thoughts on this piece. You all rock!

one thing came to mind when I first saw that piece, maybe a part of the old coal burning fireplaces, a grate
the size, material, and subject matter made me consider that, however I could not find anything that could say 100% for sure

What I thought of at first look, is a sewing machine table (side). 28" is about right for that too. I've seen some very ornate ones, but never with a figure like that. So...??

I get the impression that the figure is a middle eastern woman and her face is covered
