Insides of rifles or any other guns are made of steel, not brass. Firearm mechanisms get a lot of use and brass would wear out quickly which is why all interior parts are steel.

After further examine the piece, I think it copper. Inside the hole, it's threaded with fine threads. I have no idea what this is.

Looks a bit like those old school window latch tools. They were mounted on a long pole so you could reach them to work the latch.

Looks a bit like those old school window latch tools. They were mounted on a long pole so you could reach them to work the latch.
That's what I thought but this looks kind of light duty. The ones I've seen are for about broom handle sized poles or a little bigger. This looks like it's for about a half inch rod.

Auto parts stores sometimes have a similar one to move fan belts to and from a wall rack.
