I need help identifying what this artifact is. I found it in SE Tennessee so it was possibly made by a Cherokee.

This artifact is perfectly smooth, like it was polished. Even the edges have been rounded smooth.
This makes me think it was not intended to be a tool. Usually stone tools have chip marks, but this has none.

I don't believe someone would spend tremendous amounts of time, or energy, hand polishing a rock this smooth
if they were going to whack something with it.

I have a friend who also found one of these, approx. 7 miles from where I found mine.
His is exactly the same size and shape, polished very smooth, except his is solid black and mine is grayish white.

He thinks his was used in some kind of ceremonial or shaman dance.

I would really appreciate it if anyone could give insight as to what this is, what it was used for and how old it might be.

I think it may have been the beginning of a pipe form. But others more knowledgable should know

Was it found on land or in a creek or River?

I found it on a rock pile approx. 10 feet from a creek. I don't think the water did this. My friends was found on land, no where near water.

I posted it here because I read that this was where I was supposed to post it. This was my first post and I'm not sure how I should do this. Do I re-post the same thing twice or do I move this over to there? thanks

If two exact pieces were found then they may have been made pieces, but we need to see your friends example next to yours for comparison. Stone axes are smooth so it is possible that it is a made piece...IMO

I would say 99% man made. Pipe

Someone else has told me that it could have been the beginning of a pipe. I just don't know how they would drill a hole in it.

He lives about 120 miles from me so I can't take a picture right now, but when I go down there again I will definitely take some and post them. They are both nearly identical except one is black, the other white.

This guy is a 60 year old mountain man who is true country. He has lived in the hills all his life and has never had a cell phone. I will be going down there this weekend and will try to get some photos then.
