its a Spanish treasure type coin --the shield on the rear * has castles and lions * on it --they vary in value from 1/2 real up to 8 reales --and are silver

The name of the coin is "copy", as these types are relatively modern cast copies or replicas, generally produced for the tourist trade, resembling the earlier Spanish Colonial minted reales and escudos minted and hand struck in Central and South America.

1st - I noticed this is your very first post - so, welcome aboard from the great state of Pennsylvania (USA).

2nd - You didn't mention your state (or country) - but you might consider jumping over to Sub-Forums: Select Your Area.... and selecting your state for information (i.e., clubs, hunts, finds, legends, maps, etc.) directly related to your state (or country).

3rd - how about placing a quarter next to it to give it a relative size dacosta.

You mean if it "wasn't" a replica how much would it be worth. There's not really an answer to that because you can't make a pretend item real, and the real ones are valued on a case by case basis. That said, it's easy to spend $100 on a nice early Spanish silver coin.
